TRANSFORMATIVE TERRITORIES: PERFORMING TRANSITION THROUGH THE ARTS

Conscient·es de la nécessité de redéfinir le sens des pratiques artistiques dans nos sociétés, et incarnant concrètement les grandes ambitions du New European Bauhaus, COAL mène de 2024 à 2026, avec cinq partenaires européens, l’accompagnement scientifique du Centre des Politiques de la Terre et de l’Institut Michel Serres, ainsi qu’avec le soutien de Creative Europe, le programme Transformatives Territories: performing transition through the arts.

Celui-ci explore le rôle des arts et des pratiques artistiques transformatrices à l’échelle des territoires.

Les six acteurs culturels réunis dans le programme de coopération Transformatives Territories œuvrent, de longue date, pour une alliance de l’art et de la soutenabilité. Ils se sont donné pour objectif de contribuer à l’essor d’une culture de la durabilité pour faire advenir et incarner d’autres récits artistiques, scientifiques et politiques de transformation écologique et solidaire de nos sociétés. Cinq d’entre eux ont créé des lieux de culture atypiques et non-institutionnels, véritables laboratoires à ciel ouvert, terrains où expérimenter des “écotopies” concrètes et réalistes. Ils se caractérisent, en particulier, par leur implantation rurale ou agricole qui favorise la connexion avec les réalités du territoire local, la vie quotidienne, la diversité biologique et les cycles naturels.

INLAND-Campo Adentro (Espagne), est un de ces projets reliant l’art et la ruralité, basé à Madrid, à Majorque et dans les montagnes du nord de l’Espagne. On y trouve une école de bergers, une maison d’édition et d’autres activités. Il a été initié par l’artiste et agroécologiste Fernando Garcia Dory en 2009.

L’artiste Olivier Darné, avec Zone Sensible, a créé une ferme en permaculture à Saint Denis dans la périphérie de Paris (France) pour réenchanter les paysages défigurés de la banlieue et en révéler les richesses.

En Bohème (République Tchèque), l’artiste américaine Barbara Benish a créé la ferme ArtMill, à l’emplacement de l’ancien moulin Červený Mlýn. Un lieu dédié aux expérimentations artistiques durables, situées et non hiérarchisantes où se croisent les échelles locale et internationale.

Depuis 2019, Locus Athens a créé Tavros, un lieu baptisé au nom du quartier d’Athènes (Grèce) où il se situe et en référence à son histoire migratoire turque, en défendant un art opérationnel pour l’écologie, la démocratie et l’égalité.

L’Instituto Terra Memoria a, quant à lui, su fédérer le village de Maçao (Portugal) et ses nombreux partenaires intercontinentaux autour des enjeux sociaux, environnementaux et culturels de la transition écologique par le biais de l’archéologie et de la mémoire. COAL, enfin, coordinateur du programme, accompagne quant à elle depuis 2008, l’émergence d’une nouvelle culture de l’écologie et du vivant à travers des actions emblématiques.

Son Prix COAL Art et Écologie, a permis en 15 éditions d’identifier et de faire émerger des centaines d’artistes qui, à travers le monde, emploient leur talent à imaginer et expérimenter des solutions, à rendre visible et accompagner la transformation des territoires, des modes de vie, des organisations, et des modes de production.

Ces six partenaires explorent et expérimentent, à travers leurs lieux et leurs pratiques culturelles atypiques et pionnières, des processus collectifs pour faire la Paix avec la Terre.

Nouveaux lieux d’apprentissage et de transmission à l’échelle des territoires, ils contribuent chaque jour à inventer de nouveaux modèles culturels résilients et inclusifs. Ils constituent notamment des Laboratoires d’expérimentation et d’apprentissage de ce que nous appelons les Pratiques artistiques transformatrices.

Portées par une nouvelle génération d’artistes, ces pratiques artistiques, issues de processus collectifs, participatifs et transdisciplinaires, font varier les registres, les modes d’attention ou encore les façons d’impliquer d’autres entités pour reconfigurer les manières d’habiter la Terre. Elles constituent de véritables Solutions fondées sur la culture pour la transition écologique des territoires. À travers des recherches-créations transnationales, des temps forts collectifs, l’accompagnement d’un comité scientifique, la création d’outil méthodologique et leur dissémination, Transformative Territories veut valoriser les laboratoires d’innovation que constituent ces sites et les potentiels de leurs pratiques.

L’objectif de renforcer la circulation des artistes, des œuvres et des méthodologies dans ce champ, de faire émerger des Pratiques Artistiques Transformatrices, de renforcer les capacités de ces lieux et des artistes qu’ils accompagnent par le développement de pédagogies innovantes et la structuration d’un réseau élargi ; Transformative Territories vise à établir une véritable plateforme d’échanges et d’entraide entre ces organisations ; il s’agit de disséminer leurs savoir-faire spécifiques et leur potentiel à tout le secteur culturel et plus largement aux autres secteurs de la transition écologique, au service d’une transformation durable des territoires et de nos façons d’habiter.

La quinzième édition du Prix COAL « Se Transformer » s’inscrit dans ce cadre du programme européen Transformative Territories, et valorisera une centaine de projets à l’échelle européenne.

Aware of the need to redefine the meaning of artistic practices in our societies, while embodying in concrete terms the great ambitions of the New European Bauhaus, COAL is running a project from 2024 to 2026, with five European partners, the scientific accompaniment of the Centre des Politiques de la Terre and the Institut Michel Serres, and with the support of Creative Europe, the Transformative Territories : performing transition through the artsprogram, to explore the role of the arts and transformative artistic practices on a territorial scale.

The six cultural players brought together in theTransformatives Territories cooperation program have long been working towards an alliance between art and sustainability. They have set themselves the goal of contributing to the development of a culture of sustainability, of bringing about and embodying other artistic, scientific and political narratives of ecological transformation and solidarity in our societies.

Five of them have set up atypical, non-institutional cultural venues, genuine open-air laboratories where they can experiment with concrete, realistic “ecotopias”. In particular, they are characterized by their rural or agricultural location, which favors a connection with the realities of the local territory, daily life, biological diversity and natural cycles.

INLAND-Campo Adentro (Spain), is a project connecting art and rurality based in Madrid, Mallorca and the mountains of Northern Spain, with a Shepherds School, a publishing house and other activities. It was initiated by artist and agroecologist Fernando Garcia Dory in 2009.

Instituto Terra Memoriahas managed to unite the village of Maçao (Portugal) and its many intercontinental partners around the social, environmental and cultural challenges of ecological transition through archaeology and memory.

COALthe program coordinator, has been supporting the emergence of a new culture of ecology and life through emblematic actions since 2008. In 15 editions, its COAL Art and Ecology Prize has helped to identify and bring to the fore hundreds of artists around the world who use their talent to imagine and experiment with solutions, to make visible and accompany the transformation of territories, lifestyles, organizations and modes of production.

These six partners are exploring and experimenting with collective processes for making Peace with the Earth, through their atypical and pioneering cultural venues and practices. As new places of learning and transmission on a regional scale, they contribute every day to inventing new cultural models that are resilient and inclusive. In particular, they are laboratories for experimenting and learning what we call Transformative Artistic Practices.

Driven by a new generation of artists, these artistic practices, born from collective, participatory and transdisciplinary processes, vary registers, modes of attention and ways of involving other entities to reconfigure ways of inhabiting the Earth. They are real Culture-based solutions for the ecological transition of territories. Through transnational research-creation, collective events, support for a scientific committee, the creation of methodological tools and their dissemination, TT aims to promote the innovation laboratories that these sites represent, and the potential of their practices.

We collectively aim at strengthening the circulation of artists, works and methodologies in this emerging field of Transformative Artistic Practices, at reinforcing the capacities of these places and the artists they support through the development of innovative skill-sharing and the structuring of an extended network/. Transformative Territories wishes to establish a genuine platform for exchange and mutual support between these organizations, to disseminate their specific know-how and potential to the entire cultural sector and further to other sectors of the ecological transition at the service of a sustainable transformation of territories and of our ways of living.

The fifteenth edition of the COAL “Se Transformer” Award is part of the European Transformative Territories program, and will showcase some 100 projects across Europe.
